Michael’s method of art-making sometimes involves amateur pyrotechnics (cherry bombs) to create provocative imagery. Some of his site-specific installations and videos of past explosive events may not be suitable viewing for under-age witnesses. As we know gunpowder is a Chinese invention. It fuels the celebratory fireworks, displaying a benign, social use of its power. Some people see dual uses of gunpowder as embodying Chairman Mao's slogan, "No destruction, no construction." Some viewers may also couple the belief that demolition precedes rebirth with Taoism. In Taoism, the primal life force of pure energy (Qi) flows through the interpenetrating opposites of yin and yang. Michael’s outlook infuses and transforms reality. He is constantly reminding us of the world we live in, one of constant change for better or for worst.
