Sebastian Tomczak
DIY Aesthetic
Sebastian Tomczak is a music technologist with an interest in the live aspects of performance as well as the integration of lateral technology and ideas into modern musical arts practice. He is a postgraduate student, a lecturer and a tutor at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, Australia. He has a keen interest in chip music as well as the implications of technological and conceptual limitations on music composition.
Sebastian is a strong supporter of the ‘do-it-yourself’ aesthetic and movement, having himself built a wide variety of software and hardware-based musical devices. Do it yourself, or DIY, is based on communities providing for their own needs, creating their own goods, avoiding the use of paid professionals. Sebastian has written papers and presented at numerous national conferences, advocating communities’ adoption of the DIY movement. His water surface-based music controller has been well-received internationally.
